Develop a positive mindset this festive season
We often talk about having a positive mindset but how, in a nutshell, do we get one?

A positive mindset is made up of 4 broad areas, outlined below:
Optimism
Optimism is a positive outlook -Optimists have healthier lifestyles and better social support systems
What to do?
- Make downward comparisons (Rather than upward) It could always be worse.
- When it’s all gone a bit pear-shaped ask yourself 3 things:
- What's good about this situation?
- What can I learn from it?
- What opportunities does it give me?
Self-confidence
Is about energy and determination, resulting in better relationships and a feeling of being connected. Self-confident people usually influence others more easily.
What to do?
- Write down three good things that happened on a daily basis (Really search for them if this is difficult)
- Identify your strengths and use them (for an online strengths quiz, see VIA.com)
Personal control
Is your belief about how much you can influence good events and avoid bad events.
What to do
- Set SMART goals and monitor your progress
- Develop a ‘Best Possible Self’ diary – who is it you want to be?
Self Compassion
Is the ability to treat yourself with real compassion (and not beat yourself up).
What to do?
- Talk to yourself as you would a good friend (Really tune into your inner voice and listen to what its saying -- if you don’t like what you hear change it)
- Practice self compassion ‘in the moment’
- I recognise that this is difficult
- I’m not alone in this
- What do I need to comfort me right now? Google Kristen Neff
