Resilience is recovery (at Christmas or any other time)
According to McKinsey almost half of all employees report being at least somewhat burnt-out.
It’s all of our responsibilities to look after ourselves, no one can do it for us, but if you’re thinking “I’ll just push through this extra shift” or “I need to keep going whatever” think again.

“You don’t do 5 years of loveless work / pushing through and come out the same person…and what happens to the people around you in those 5 years? When you’re bringing home the ‘loveless work’ vibe every night?”
-- Stephen Bartlett. ‘Diary of a CEO’
Burnout is preventable and resilience is a set of skills that can be learned. Switching off is absolutely critical.
Here are some things that you can do over this festive season to avoid burnout
- Connect to the real purpose of your job. What was it you joined to do? What really motivates you? And when do you get job satisfaction?
- Practice being ‘Good enough’ Not everything has to be perfect. Work to the 80/20 rule. Sometimes 80% really is good enough.
- Ensure you build in time for recovery. Resilience is recovery. Without sufficient recovery time you will burnout, it’s that straight forward. Do something you love.
- Remember that you have to accept things that you can’t control (read that again)
- If you only do one thing make it no emails after 7pm or at weekends (adjustable for shifts J )
Remember there is no team or organisational resilience without having resilient individuals.
Spend time recovering this festive season by doing things you love. Have a great break.
